Two people were killed in police firing in India's western Gujarat state today as fresh Hindu-Muslim clashes erupted, police said.
The latest upsurge follows a wave of religious violence earlier this month in which more than 700 people, mostly Muslims, were killed. The religious bloodshed was triggered by the burning alive of 58 Hindu activists in a train on February 27th.
"Two people died when police fired to disperse a mob which was pelting stones on a state bus and trying to set fire to shops in Modasa", a police spokesman said.
Modasa lies 90 km north of Ahmedabad, Gujarat's main city. Authorities had clamped an indefinite curfew and the situation was under control.
The spokesman added that one person sustained stab injuries in the rioting but was out of danger.
