Two hill-walkers were killed and another was injured when they got into difficulties while climbing on Magillicuddy Reeks in Co Kerry.

A man in his mid-60s and a woman in her 30s died when they fell into gully near Lough Duff three miles south of Carrantuohill.

One of the party of four managed to raise the alarm at around 3.30 p.m. this afternoon.

Kerry Mountain Rescue and the Valentia Coastguard helicopter began a search around Carrantuohill and revovered one man (35) who has been taken to hospital in Tralee. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

"Search efforts were hampered by low-lying cloud and reduced visibility at higher altitudes," a Coastguard spokesman said today.

A short time later the bodies of the two other climbers were discovered at an altitude of 1,500 feet.

The member of the party who reported the accident was not injured.

In a separate incident today, a man was rescued on Carrantuohill by another unit of Kerry Mountain Rescue. He was taken to Tralee General Hospital where he is said to be recovering.
