Police in Scotland have arrested two teenagers after 11 children were injured in an airgun attack near a school in Auchinleck, East Ayrshire this afternoon.

Officers were alerted after an airgun was fired in the town's Church Street, near Auchinleck Academy, at around 1.40pm.

Chief Superintendent John Thompson said five girls and six boys between the ages of 12 and 16 were struck by pellets, mainly on their legs and torsos. No-one was seriously hurt in the incident but it is understood that one pupil remains in Crosshouse Hospital, near Kilmarnock.

Two males aged 15 and 18 are in police custody.

Local MP and MSP Cathy Jamieson said the incident, which happened less than half a mile from the school, highlighted the danger air weapons pose to communities.

Plans are currently under way to hand responsibility for airgun legislation from Westminster to the Scottish Government.
