Two men were arrested and a firearm recovered after police opened fire during an incident in north Belfast yesterday evening.
An RUC spokesman said the incident, believed to be linked to a robbery attempt, had been referred to the Police Ombudsman for investigation and was not believed to be paramilitary-related.
The area around the incident, on Hillview Road between the Crumlin Road and Old Park Road, was sealed off as a British army bomb disposal team examined the scene, which appeared to be centred around a red van outside a cash-and-carry store.
