Gardaí are investigating an armed raid on a post office in Co Cavan.

Two masked men armed with a hammer and a knife entered the office at Mullagh shortly before 12.15pm yesterday. The men threatened staff and customers, smashed a counter glass panel and demanded cash.

They left the scene in a blue car in the direction of Virginia, Co Cavan, with an undisclosed amount of cash. Gardaí later arrested two men in Baileboro, Co Cavan, in connection with the robbery.

The two men, aged 30 and 42, are being detained at Baileboro Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Separately, gardaí have seized a sawn-off shotgun at a house in Co Kerry. As part of a planned operation, detectives searched the house in the Tralee area yesterday.

A man in his 20s was arrested and is being held under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act at Tralee Garda Station.
