At least four shots were fired at Johnson, who had been sitting in the back seat of a red Volkswagen Golf being driven by a young woman on Moorfield Avenue.

The victim lived nearby with his parents and younger brother. His mother is believed to have been among a number of local people who rushed to the scene after hearing the shots being fired.

He was taken to Tallaght hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Johnson was known to gardaí and had been convicted of possession of a large quantity of ecstasy tablets with an estimated street value of €30,000 in 2008. However, gardaí do not believe he was a major player on the drugs scene.
