An elderly woman and a young man died in separate road accidents in Northern Ireland at the weekend, bringing to 12 the number of people who have died on the roads in the North in just over a week.

Ms Gwyenth Craig (69), from Greenisland, Co Antrim, died and four other people were injured in an accident on the Ballybogey Road between Portrush and Ballymoney, Co Antrim, on Saturday at about 5 p.m. She was a passenger in a Peugeot car which collided with a van.

The five casualties were taken to Coleraine Hospital where a spokesman described one injured woman as being in a "serious, stable condition". One man suffered serious leg injuries and two other men had minor injuries.

Mr Michael McAtamney (18) from Garvagh, Co Derry, died when the Vauxhall Nova car he was driving collided with a car on the Moneymore Road near Magherafelt at 1 a.m. on Sunday. A passenger in the other car was slightly injured.

Meanwhile, Mr Owen McNally from Coleraine, an Irish road race champion, was in a critical condition in hospital last night following a crash at the Ulster Grand Prix. Mr McNally (30) suffered serious head and neck injuries when his machine slid into a hedge at 130 m.p.h. during the competition in Dundrod, Co Antrim, on Saturday.
