Two women were killed and 37 fishermen are still missing after violent storms hit Senegal in the past few days, government officials said today.

As many as 110 of a total 147 fishermen missing at sea since Wednesday were recovered alive, the fisheries ministry said. A number of them were found in Gambia.

The majority of fishermen, who use canoes, do not wear life jackets and do not consult weather reports before going to sea, Fisheries Minister Sheikh Sadibu Fall said.

Meanwhile two women died in the northern region of Podor when their houses collapsed under intense rain and severe winds that whipped the whole country, local radio stations reported.

Large numbers of animals have also died in the cold snap which accompanied the storms in the centre and north of Senegal, they said.
