Two men are due in court this morning charged with stealing more than £10,000 from a building society in Cork on Friday afternoon. William O'Callaghan (30) from Knocknaheeny and Mark Kenny (20) from Gurranabraher, Cork are both charged with robbing the Irish Nationwide office in Patrick Street, Cork.
Both men were charged with the offence when they appeared before Judge Uinsionn Mac Gruairc at a special sitting of Cork District Court at the weekend. Inspector Martin Shanahan opposed bail because of the serious nature of the charges, the large sum involved and alleged threats to the staff with a hammer. He also opposed bail on the grounds that both me n were allegedly caught red-handed as they exited the building and because they allegedly fail to stop when challenged by gardai.
The judge remanded Kenny in custody and he remanded O'Callaghan in custody with consent to bail on his own bond of £100 and one independent surety of £10,000 or two of £5,000 - both to appear at Cork District Court this morning.
