Wellington - Two young asylum seekers from the Norwegian freighter Tampa have been detained in an Auckland prison on arrival in New Zealand, the Immigration Service said yesterday.

The pair, who arrived as part of a batch of 61 asylum seekers on a charter flight from Nauru, were "detained for security reasons" after being interviewed by border officials.

The youths, aged 16 and 17, are from a group of 433 mainly Afghan boat people rescued by the Tampa from a sinking boat in the Indian Ocean a month ago.
