THE PSNI is treating as murder the death of a pensioner in Co Tyrone. The body of a 78-year-old man was discovered at Brook Valley in Omagh in the early hours of Saturday.
Two people, a juvenile and an 18-year-old man, have been arrested in connection with the investigation.
A spokeswoman for the PSNI said: “Details about the man’s injuries and the circumstances of the incident are not available for investigative reasons.”
The two arrested were originally detained for questioning about burglary, were released but were rearrested.
Meanwhile, a 44-year-old man was being treated in a Belfast hospital last night for serious head injuries he received in an assault in Armagh.
The man was attacked in the Gaol Square area of the city at around 1.30am yesterday.
The man was named locally as James Loughran, originally from Emyvale, Co Monaghan, who had been living in Aughnacloy, Co Tyrone, just a few miles away, for a number of years.
He was a well-known GAA player for Emyvale in his youth, and played for the club’s juvenile teams.
The PSNI in Armagh is appealing for witnesses to the attack, including the driver of a minibus taxi believed to have been nearby.
It is also studying CCTV footage from the area, which is close to a women’s prison and a PSNI base.
A 20-year-old man has been charged with grievous bodily harm after an assault in west Belfast.
A 21-year-old man was struck several times with a baseball bat by two men in Ardcaoin Drive in Poleglass on Saturday. Several windows of a house were also smashed.
The suspect will appear at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court this morning.
