TWO IMPORTANT historical archives featuring photographs, diaries and documents from the early 20th century were put on public display in Limerick last night.
Former workers of Ranks Mills one of Ireland’s biggest flourmills attended a civic reception at Limerick City Council yesterday to mark the donation of an important archive to the city.
The diaries and photographs of Cecil Mercier, a former mills manager in Ranks has been donated to the Limerick City Archives.
Mr Mercier worked in the Limerick milling industry for 43 years and was well known to generations of Ranks workers. The Limerick mill closed in 1983 ending 700 years of milling in the city.
Limerick city archivist Jacqui Hayes noted: “Limerick had a long tradition in the milling industry, dating back to the 13th century and during the 18th century the city was at the forefront of the milling industry in Ireland.”
