Twelve people were killed and 25 hurt today when a busload of pilgrims crashed near Shahrud, northeastern Iran, the official IRNA news agency reported.
Nine of the dead were police officers, the agency said.
The driver, who was heading for the Shiite holy city of Mashhad, lost control of the vehicle, which rolled over several times, an earlier report said.
Iran's roads are among the most dangerous in the world, with vehicles in poor condition and drivers who flout all regulations.
