The European Union's enlargement commissioner said today a Turkish prosecutor's move to seek a ban on Turkey's ruling AK party failed to respect the principles of a "normal European society".
"In a normal European democracy, political issues are debated in parliament and decided in the ballot box; not in the court room," EU enlargement commissioner Olli Rehn said in a statement today.
Asked whether the law suit going ahead could affect Turkey's EU accession bid, he said: "It is difficult to see that this law suit respects the democratic principles of a normal european society."
