South Korea 2 Turkey 3
Isn't the third-place play-off supposed to be a dull, meaningless affair? Well it seems nobody told Turkey and South Korea as they served up a treat which would have been worthy of the final itself.
The two teams went goal crazy in a fitting finale to the World Cup in Korea.
Turkey edged this shoot-out between the two World Cup upstarts and they will certainly be proud to have finished third in their first World Cup in 48 years.
For Guus Hiddink, in what was more than likely his last game in charge of Korea, it was yet another defeat in the third-place play-off following Holland's loss to Croatia at France '98, but that hardly matters after what he has done at this World Cup.
The game got off to a flying start in the Daegu World Cup stadium when Hakan Sukur scored after just 10.8 seconds to register the fastest goal in history of the World Cup finals.
Korea played the ball back from the kick-off only for Ilhan Mansiz to dispossess skipper Hong Myung-bo on the edge of his area and he then squared it to Sukur, who stroked home left-footed.
What a way for the much-maligned striker to belatedly get off the mark in the tournament.
Emre Belozoglu flashed a shot wide before Korea levelled in the ninth minute with a terrific free-kick from Lee Eul-yong.
From 25 yards out he whipped the ball left-footed over the Turkish wall and it brushed the post on its way into the top corner.
Turkey hit back within three minutes in this ding-dong match when Ilhan exchanged passes with Sukur, whose return completely wrong-footed the Korean defence, before tucking the ball into the far corner, despite a despairing lunge from Lee Min-sung.
The hectic pace continued and Rustu Recber denied Ahn Jung-hwan midway through the half. The twisting and turning Ahn tried to get in a shot with his right foot, and then his left before switching back to his right and hitting a drive which Rustu palmed over the bar.
On 32 minutes of this crazy match it was 3-1 when Sukur and Ilhan combined again. Hakan nodded back Rustu's long goal-kick to Ilhan, whose attempted one-two with his strike partner seemed to come off Lee Min-sung and the grateful Besiktas hitman lifted the ball over Lee Woon-jae to register his third World Cup goal in his last three games.
Korea thought they had pulled a goal back when Ahn netted, but the assistant referee already had his flag up for offside.
The Koreans tried to maintain the pressure and Song Chong-gug cut in from the right before whizzing a left-foot shot just over the crossbar.
Then Lee Eul-yong ran at the heart of the Turkish defence only to shoot straight at Rustu, who saved comfortably.
Back came Turkey and Lee Eul-yong averted a fourth goal when he turned Ergun Penbe's left-wing cross behind for a corner ahead of the lurking Sukur.
Urged on by their fanatical following, Korea kept going and Rustu got down well to his left to save from Lee Chun-soo before Ahn saw a shot deflected narrowly wide.
Hiddink threw on Cha Du-ri for the final push and he hit a shot which Rustu gathered at the second attempt before heading over.
Song scored the goal Korea's efforts deserved in the third minute of stoppage time to end their World Cup on a high note.
