Renewed disturbances broke out in North Belfast tonight with the Police Service of Northern Ireland reporting homes in a number of streets in the Whitewell area being petrol bombed - including Serpentine Road where a Catholic family home was damaged in an early morning attack.
Police said the area remained tense and there was a strong security force presence to try and prevent the situation boiling over.
Earlier this evening the situation was relatively calm after fresh rioting broke out when rival nationalists and loyalists clashed this afternoon.
Petrol bombs and other missiles were thrown and a number of civilians were reported to have been injured.
About 100 on each side clashed and police who moved in to separate the factions came under attack with petrol bombs.
The violence followed rioting in the Whitewell area of north Belfast last night which left some police officers with injuries. Three people were also arrested.
