Kinshasa - Troops loyal to President Laurent Kabila have ejected Tutsi-led rebels from the western port of Boma and are advancing on rebel positions in the east, state radio and senior officials said yesterday.

The radio said the strategic Congo river ports Boma and Matadi, about 350 km south-west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo's capital Kinshasa, were quiet and controlled by government troops.

Information Minister and Government spokesman, Mr Didier Mumengi, said that army loyalists were advancing on rebel positions in the east, where soldiers from the ethnic Tutsi Banyamulenge community launched the revolt on August 2nd. An envoy of the Organisation of African Unity, Mr Mamadou Bah, arrived in Kinshasa on Sunday and began talks with cabinet ministers on the crisis yesterday.
