FRANKFURT AN DER ODER - Thousands of troops worked around the clock in east
Germany yesterday to shore up the banks of the Oder River in the German army's biggest peacetime operation since the second World War.
Officials warned 19,000 residents in the low-lying area of Oderbruch north of
Frankfurt an der Oder to be ready for evacuation if more dykes reinforcing the banks burst, threatening to unleash the area's worst flooding in 50 years. -
