UUP leader Mr David Trimble and DUP leader Mr Ian Paisley today held their meeting over a common strategy on policing.
The two held a 40-minute breakfast meeting at Stormont.
The UUP would not comment on the meeting, but the DUP said both leaders "agreed to resume their talks later this week".
Both parties have so far withheld nominations to the Northern Ireland's 19-member Policing Board, and they have urged the Government to answer their concerns about policing reforms.
The DUP and anti-Belfast Agreement Unionists have urged Mr Trimble to boycott the Policing Board until the policing reform implementation plan is made more acceptable to their community.
The SDLP is the only one of the four parties entitled to sit on the board which has said it will take its seats.
Sinn Féin is boycotting the board on the grounds the police reforms do not go far enough to satisfy its community's demands.
