A fallen tree which was brought down by high winds overnight was later struck by the Westport to Dublin passenger train early yesterday.
There were no injuries but the train was damaged in the impact at Islandeady, Castlebar, and could not continue. The company paid for taxis from Claremorris to Dublin Airport for two passengers who were in danger of missing flights.
Meanwhile, power has been restored to hundreds of properties that lost supply after winds and falling branches brought down lines on Saturday night and yesterday morning. A spokeswoman for ESB networks said crews had worked all day to restore power.
Mild but wet weather is predicted for the next few days. There will be some showers today, with frost due in many parts of the country on Christmas morning and showers on Atlantic coasts especially in Munster, said Met Éireann. Day temperatures will be six to eight degrees. St Stephen’s Day will have a bright start but showers will move in from the west bringing at times heavy rain.
