The Vintners' Federation of Ireland has welcomed a Circuit Court judgment overturning an equality tribunal finding that a Traveller had been discriminated against.
The case concerned Mr Andy Cash and his wife, Kay, who had claimed that they had suffered discrimination as members of the Travelling community when Mr Cash was asked to leave Deane's Bar, Bunclody, Co Wexford.
Mr Rory Deane had said that Mr Cash, a regular customer, had been asked to leave because he had too much drink taken. However, the equality tribunal found that the couple had been discriminated against and awarded Mr Cash €600 and Ms Cash €1,000.
A VFI statement said it hoped other publicans would be encouraged to appeal to the Circuit Court.
The chief executive of the Equality Authority, Mr Niall Crowley, said it was not possible to generalise from one case, but a number of such appeals had failed.
