London - Trams made a comeback in London yesterday for the first time in almost 50 years. The £200 million Croydon Tramlink will serve a 17-mile stretch in the south London suburbs. It was inaugurated by Mr Fred Roberts (83), who drove the last Croydon tram before it was taken out of service in 1951. "It is a great honour to have driven the last tram in south London and to be on the first new one nearly 50 years later," he said.
Two other tram services, from Beckenham and Wimbledon, also in south London, are due to open shortly.
