SPAIN: Spain's ruling party has recommended stricter control over mosques and "democracy training" for Spanish-based imams in the wake of last year's March 11th bombings, which killed 191 people in Madrid.

The recommendations appear in a report by Socialist party representatives on a special parliamentary commission set up to look into the Madrid bombings.

One proposal calls for "promoting an intense co-operation" between state institutions and Islamic leaders "to make training in democratic values possible for the people who attend the imam training schools in our country". Another suggests providing state economic aid to Islamic leaders.

A section of the report is dedicated to Islam, saying it should be free from discrimination and its adherents should be able to practise their faith without fear of reprisals.

But it also proposes the codifying of offences that would justify "dissolving religious groups or suspending their activities".
