The train that crashed through barriers at a level crossing in Co Longford this morning went through a "busy" road, according to local gardai.

The 6.20 a.m. Longford to Dublin Pearse train ploughed through the barriers at the Ballymahon level crossing between Longford and Edgeworthstown stations.

Garda Martin Fox said the "barriers were shut and the road would have been free to traffic."  He said the road to Ballymahon from Edgeworthstown is small but "busy enough." He said not long after the incident, traffic would have been heavy on the road.

A woman on board was treated for minor injuries after the incident.  No one else was injured.

According to Iarnród Éireann, the barriers were damaged, and debris from one of the barriers struck and broke a window on the train.

The train travelled on to Edgeworthstown where the remaining passengers on board were transferred to a later train.  Services are now operating normally on the route.
