Tipperary plan extends lifespan of landfill dump

Tipperary (South Riding) County Council will stop commercial and industrial waste entering its landfill dump in October

Tipperary (South Riding) County Council will stop commercial and industrial waste entering its landfill dump in October. The council hopes the waste ban can extend the lifespan of the county dump at Donohill near Tipperary town so it can continue to take domestic waste.

The council is obliged under waste management legislation to facilitate the disposal of domestic waste.

"If we didn't do this the landfill would be full by December. We are in crisis at the moment and we have a responsibility to dispose of household and domestic waste," said Mr Jimmy Harney, senior executive manager of the waste management section at South Tipperary County Council.

Donohill takes 48,000 tonnes of waste each year, half of which is commercial and industrial waste. The move will extend the lifespan of the landfill to May after which the council will have to dispose of its waste elsewhere.
