Three men are being questioned by the Garda following a serious assault near Dublin city centre last night.

Three men are being questioned by the Garda following a serious assault near Dublin city centre last night.

A Garda spokeswoman said four men were approached by a group of six people, four men and two women at around 9.30 p.m. at the Royal Canal, near Croke Park. A 48-year-old man suffered head and neck injuries and was taken to the Mater Hospital where he was placed on life support.

It is understood the injured man is originally from Lithuania.

Three 18-year-old men were taken into custody in connection with the incident. Two are being held at Mountjoy Garda Station while the third is being questioned at Store Street Garda Station. All three are being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The Garda have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious area between 9.30 p.m. and 10 p.m. last night to contact them at 01-6668600.
