THREE MEN were questioned by gardaí in Limerick after fleeing the scene of a road crash, which claimed the life of a retired school teacher.
Aidan Lawless (53), Clonmel, Co Tipperary, was returning home after dropping his daughter back to the University of Limerick when he was killed in a two-car collision on Sunday night.
Mr Lawless and his wife Kathleen were travelling in a Ford Mondeo when an SUV travelling in the opposite direction crossed the road and collided with their vehicle.
The collision took place at 8.15pm at Ahabeg, Ballysimon on the N24 road near the turn-off for Caherconlish in Co Limerick.
Gardaí say the occupants of the SUV fled the scene and two men, in their late 20s and late 30s, were arrested in the vicinity a short time later. A third man, aged 38, was arrested at 11.30am in Ardnacrusha, Co Clare, yesterday.
He was being held at Henry Street Garda station last night under section four of the Criminal Justice Act.
The two men arrested on Sunday night were released without charge yesterday afternoon and a file is being prepared for the DPP, according to a Garda spokesman.
Mr Lawless, from the Powerstown area of Clonmel , was taken to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick where he was pronounced dead.
His wife was also taken to hospital where she was treated for injuries which were described as not life-threatening.
