THREE MEN were killed in separate road crashes in Donegal, Meath and Antrim at the weekend. Two of the victims were motorcyclists.
In Co Donegal yesterday, a man, named locally as Hugh Donegan, died and another man was seriously injured when their car left the road and careered through a fence into a field.
The single-vehicle crash happened at about 10am in bright, sunny conditions on a bend at Clar, Redcastle, on the main Muff to Moville Road. Mr Donegan was in his early 30s and from the Shantallow area of Derry. The other man, his cousin, was in his late 20s and from the Redcastle area.
He underwent emergency surgery at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast yesterday afternoon.
Buncrana Garda Superintendent Paul Glynn said the incident happened in “perfect” weather conditions. Initial investigations suggested speed was a factor, he said.
A man in his 60s was killed in a crash in Co Meath on Saturday. The victim was riding a motorbike at Fennor, Oldcastle, Co Meath, when it was in collision with a car shortly after 6pm. Gardaí in Kells have appealed for witnesses.
In the North, a motorcyclist was killed yesterday when he collided with a police motorbike between Carnlough and Larne. The Police Ombudsman is to investigate the incident.
And in Dublin, a 17-year-old is in custody after a hit-and-run in which a 23-year-old man was knocked down. The incident happened at Huband Road in Bluebell after midday. The youth is being held at Kilmainham Garda station. The injured man was in a serious condition in hospital last night.
