Two men and a woman have died following house fires in Limerick and Kerry.
A man in his early 80s died when a fire broke out at a house on St Brendan’s Street in St Mary’s Park, Limerick, at about 7.30pm yesterday.
The alarm was raised by members of the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) who were patrollng the area at the time.
Two units of the Limerick fire service attended the scene.
The victim’s brother - who is in his 60s and lives at the same house - was taken to the Mid Western Regional Hospital where he was being treated for injuries suffered in the blaze. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
The victim’s body was removed from the scene last night and the Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis is due to carry out a postmortem today. It is not yet known what started the blaze which was confined to a downstairs room in the terraced house.
Separately, a man in his 60s died following a fire at a house in Tralee, Co Kerry.
Gardaí were called to the scene in Connolly Park at 9.30pm. It is understood the fire broke out in a shed at the rear of the house.
In the third incident yesterday, a woman in her 90s died at her home near Castleisland, Co Kerry.
Gardaí believe the blaze broke out when the woman's clothes caught fire at 6am.
