A WOMAN was arrested on suspicion of drink driving on Saturday evening following the death of a 27-year-old female pedestrian in Co Kildare. She was one of two pedestrians killed on the roads at the weekend.
Three people were killed on the roads on Friday and Saturday.
The woman was crossing the Dublin Road in Maynooth, Co Kildare at about 8pm when she was hit by a car.
She was taken to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown where she was pronounced dead.
The driver of the car, a woman in her 40s, was arrested at the scene for suspected drink driving. She was later released and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Earlier on Saturday, a Galway man was killed when the van he was driving struck a ditch on the R357 at Raghrabeg, Shannonbridge, Co Offaly.
Shane McKenna (30), Portnick Drive, Creagh, Ballinasloe, Co Galway, was the only occupant of the van when the crash occurred at around 10.30am. He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to Portiuncula Hospital.
Another pedestrian was killed when he was struck by a car last Friday. Jack Ryan (55), Knockderk, Pallasgreen, Co Limerick, was hit by a car on Church Road at Coole, Kilteely, Co Limerick, shortly before 8pm. He died at the scene and was removed to Limerick Regional Hospital.
Separately gardaí are appealing for witnesses to a crash in which two people were seriously injured in the early hours of Saturday morning.
A silver Toyota Glanza, with the licence plate 96 D 63112, crashed into a lamppost on Kilteel Road, Rathcoole, Co Dublin, shortly before 3.30am.
No one was killed, but the two occupants of the car, a man and woman in their 20s, were seriously injured and brought to Tallaght hospital where they remained last night.
