SPORTS UTILITY vehicles (SUVs) and motorbikes were involved in two fatal road crashes in Dublin and Tipperary at the weekend while a motorist was killed in a third crash involving two SUVs in Wicklow.
The Wicklow crash involved GAA player Ciarán Shannon. The 37-year-old Annacurra midfielder was on his way to Blessington for a match when he was involved in a four-vehicle pile-up at Mullacagh, three kilometres south of Hollywood Cross at 4.30pm.
He was driving one of the two SUV’s involved in the crash and his wife and three children were travelling with him. His family were released from hospital later on Saturday.
Gardaí at Baltinglass have appealed for the public’s help in their investigation.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or who may have been near the scene immediately prior to or after the collision, has been asked to contact gardaí at Baltinglass on 059 6482610, or the Garda confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
County GAA chairman Andy O’Brien described Mr Shannon as an outstanding footballer and great servant of both club and county.
Gardaí at Cahir are investigating a collision that occurred at about 9.30am yesterday at Abbey Street in Cahir.
A man from Latvia, thought to be in his 30s, was fatally injured when his bike collided with an SUV. His name has not been released yet.
On Saturday afternoon, Karl Brown (24) from Cappagh Drive, Finglas died after a collision between his motorbike and an SUV.
Gardaí at Finglas are investigating the crash that occurred on the Cardiffsbridge Road shortly before 3.30pm.
