A truck driven by a drunken teenager celebrating South Korea's World Cup win over Spain hit a street lamp and killed two passengers, police said today.

The accident in the city of Taejon injured seven others, among more than 100 hurt in nationwide incidents in the hours after South Korea beat Spain in a penalty shootout yesterday to become the first Asian team to reach the World Cup semi-finals.

In the southern port city of Pusan, a 77-year-old woman died of an apparent heart attack after shouting with joy at South Korea's victory, the Yonhap news agency said.

Two young men died of heart failure after South Korea beat Italy 2-1 with a golden goal last Tuesday.

Yesterday, millions of South Koreans screamed, cried and roared themselves hoarse after the national team made World Cup history by beating Spain 5-3 on penalties to reach the last four. They had not won a match at their five previous finals.

The euphoria lasted all night in central Seoul and across the country, leading to other accidents.

The state-run Korea Broadcasting System reported today that about 100 people suffered minor injuries, such as sprains and broken bones, during street festivals in the country of 48 million people after the historic match yesterday.
