Three men arrested after a swoop on alleged dissident republicans at the weekend were charged with possession of an explosive substance at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court in Dublin yesterday. The three, twin brothers from Finglas, Dublin, and a man from Dundalk, were arrested after a surveillance operation.

Mr Kenneth Patterson (31), Mr Alan Patterson (31), both from Griffith Parade, Finglas, and Mr Darren O'Donogh (22), of Glenmore Park, Muirhevnamore, Dundalk, were remanded in custody until Friday.

They were charged with having an explosive substance at McEntee Avenue at Demesne, Dundalk, Co Louth, on Saturday.
