Nearly 5,000 people protested in Madrid today against globalisation and the war in Afghanistan.

The protestors, called up by the Spanish communist coalition Izquierda Unida and several other extreme left groups, marched behind a banner which said: "No to global capitalisation. Another world is possible".

Numerous anti-riot police were deployed along the route taken by the protestors.

The march was also a protest against the US-led attacks in Afghanistan, with protestors holding up signs saying "USA and Israel: racist and cruel" or "Bush and Aznar will not keep us quiet".
