Police said the crowd burned three US flags and chanted: "Go to hell America".

Muslim groups in several cities have staged noisy and mainly peaceful demonstrations in the world's most populous Islamic nation.

Some fringe groups have threatened to round up and expel Americans and other Westerners from Indonesia.

The government has promised to protect foreigners and squads of police are guarding embassies and some office buildings in the capital, Jakarta.
