THIS WEEK IN THE GARDEN

AS snowdrops fade it is safe to dig them up and divide old clumps

AS snowdrops fade it is safe to dig them up and divide old clumps. Other bulbs would not like this cavalier treatment but the snowdrops do not mind at all. In fact they will settle better divided "in the green" than divided while dormant in late summer or autumn.

Grass is coming into growth and lawnmowers need sharpening and servicing. A nice lawn enhances a garden so much that a special effort is always worthwhile. Not everyone will achieve a billiard table or putting green effect, and not everyone will covet such a particular finish, but some degree of neatness, greenery and vigour is desirable.

A brisk raking with a spring rake will be beneficial in removing and loosening moss, dead grass and debris. In removing this mess, air and light will get towards the roots of the grass and be most beneficial in promoting healthy growth. Spiking the grass with a fork, jabbing it in all over - as we used to do when prodding sausages - will also be a good exercise for the lawn as well as for the gardener.
