Funding of over €16 million for science and technology research in third level colleges was announced today.

Funding of over €16 million for science and technology research in third level colleges was announced today.

The funding, which is being provided by the Science Research Council and Enterprise Ireland, will be divided among 119 research projects over the next three years.

In addition to supporting existing projects, a special emphasis will be placed on encouraging new research in science, education and technology.

The Tánaiste, Ms Harney, stressed the importance of research and development in maintaining economic growth.

"By supporting the most promising individuals engaged in innovative research, Ireland will be put firmly on the map in terms of international developments and creativity in the fields of sciences, engineering and technology - which are crucial to the continued success of the Irish economy," she said.

This is the largest single allocation of funding to the Basic Research Grant Scheme. Last year, 69 projects were funded under the scheme.
