Summer temperatures have arrived just in time for the bank holiday weekend, with some parts of Ireland experiencing the hottest day of the year yesterday, writes Conor Lally

Today is expected to be another fine day in eastern areas, but the west is unlikely to be as lucky.

Met Éireann says that patchy fog or drizzle will affect southwestern and western coasts today, with more persistent rain and drizzle moving into western counties as the day goes on.

Tomorrow will be a mostly cloudy day throughout the country - warm and humid, with showery rain at times.

Bank Holiday Monday is expected to bring brighter, fresher, and cooler weather.

According to Met Éireann forecaster, Ms Deirdre Lowe, temperatures reached 25 degrees in some parts of the midlands yesterday.

Aer Rianta is expecting more than 348,000 passengers to travel through Dublin, Shannon and Cork Airports during the weekend. More than 282,000 passengers will use Dublin Airport, a 5 per cent rise on last year's June bank holiday weekend.

The Garda's Operation Taisteal continues until midnight on Monday. Officers manning 5,000 checkpoints will target speeding, the non-wearing of seatbelts and young driver behaviour. From tomorrow, those driving without insurance will incur five penalty points on their licence.
