A District Court Judge has directed that further medical and psychological assistance be provided to a teenager charged in connection with the stabbing of a Garda in Westport, Co. Mayo last Sunday.

The 16-year-old youth appeared before Judge Conal Gibbons at Castlebar District Court today charged with section 3 assault causing harm to Garda Daryl Mullen (32) at James Street, Westport, on August 9.

Remanding the teenager in custody to St Patrick’s Institution with consent to bail, Judge Gibbons recommended that he continue to receive psychological and medical attention while in custody.

The accused will appear at Westport District Court on September 3.

The injured garda, Daryl Mullen, a member of the drugs unit in the Mayo Garda Division, is recovering in Mayo General Hospital from a stomach wound. His condition is described as stable.
