A 18-year-old youth has died following a stabbing in the Moyross area of Limerick. A squad of armed gardaí have been drafted into the area to keep the peace after the teenager was killed.
Darren Bennett was stabbed during a row outside a house on Creaval Park, Moyross, Co Limerick, in the early hours of this morning. He was taken to the Mid Western Hospital Limerick, where he later died.
It is understood the incident is linked to a localised dispute in the Moyross area rather than gangland crime.
Gardaí sealed off the area to allow crime scene investigators carry out an examination but officers were forced to call in the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) after a gang of angry youths gathered.
A Garda spokesman said: “There was a group of youths down there causing bother, public order offences at the crime scene. They’re (the ERU) down there to preserve the scene.”
Local Fianna Fáil councillor John Cronin said it was a volatile stand-off, claiming the trouble was sparked by anger at the killing.
“People feel uneasy about the whole thing,” Mr Cronin said. “It’s been so long since there was a problem in Moyross. People are a bit fed up and upset over it. There is shock because things have got so good in Moyross. It has come completely unexpectedly.”
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have information to contact Mayorstone Garda station.
