Teenager dies in Cork after car hits tree

A TEENAGER died after the car he was driving crashed into a tree some 6km outside Bandon, Co Cork, early yesterday.

A TEENAGER died after the car he was driving crashed into a tree some 6km outside Bandon, Co Cork, early yesterday.

The 17-year-old male from Tower in Blarney was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was the sole occupant of the car, which crashed at about 3.35am.

His remains were taken to Cork University Hospital where a postmortem examination was carried out.

He was travelling from Clonakilty in the direction of Bandon, in a green Toyota Avensis, when the crash occurred. It is understood he had been living in the Clonakilty area for the past number of weeks.

He did not own the vehicle he was driving. A passing motorist on the N71 contacted emergency services after coming upon the scene.

The road was closed to traffic following the crash. Diversions were put in place as Garda technical experts examined the scene, close to Pedlars Cross. The road reopened at about 5pm yesterday.

Separately, a man in his 30s was killed in a single-vehicle crash near Edenderry in Co Offaly on Wednesday, at about 8pm.
