A strike which could have disrupted lectures for 2,000 students at the Dublin Institute of Technology has been averted.
Members of the Teachers' Union of Ireland at the DIT were to have voted on strike action in support of eight temporary lecturers in the faculty of applied arts who are seeking permanent posts.
Following discussions at the Labour Relations Commission yesterday the lecturers concerned are to complete personal development courses before December 31st to qualify for the positions.
The deputy general secretary of the TUI, Mr Peter McMenamin, welcomed the outcome of the talks.
