A one-day strike due to take place yesterday involving Teachers' Union of Ireland members working in 32 junior education and senior traveller training centres was cancelled after a breakthrough in negotiations with the Department of Education.
The TUI has secured agreement which will make teachers working in the centres permanent, according to a spokesman, Mr Declan Glynn. "Some 92 per cent of the teachers are currently employed on a part-time basis. This successful outcome follows a prolonged period of negotiations to implement in full the terms of the Programme for Competitiveness and Work which was agreed over a year ago."
