TDs plan hare-coursing ban Bill

A Private Member’s Bill is to be introduced in the Dáil to ban hare coursing.

A Private Member’s Bill is to be introduced in the Dáil to ban hare coursing.

Independent TD Maureen O’Sullivan and Socialist Party TD Clare Daly announced today that they hoped to move the Bill during the current Dáil term, which continues until Easter.

"Hare coursing is dangerous for both hare and dog alike, leading to injuries which cause long-term suffering, even to the dog," said Ms O’Sullivan.

Ms Daly said the Bill would be modelled on a similar piece of legislation that was unsuccessfully moved by the late Tony Gregory TD in the Dáil in the early 1990s.

"We are appealing for cross-party support for our Bill," said Ms Daly.

The TDs joined a lunchtime gathering of animal rights' groups outside the Department of Agriculture today.
