A Fine Gael TD has claimed that 10 per cent of all road accidents are caused by foreign drivers, many of whom drive on the wrong side of the road.
Mr Denis Naughten said road accident statistics from May to September 2000 showed that 17 fatal accidents had involved a foreign driver, about 10 per cent of the accident total for the period.
"About one million tourists from North America and continental Europe use cars to travel around Ireland and they find driving on the left-hand side disorientating", Mr Naughten said.
