The Taoiseach has paid tribute this afternoon to the former Fianna Fáil senator Mr Eoin Ryan Snr, who died today.
Mr Ryan served in the Senate for 30 years from 1957 to 1987 and was a successful lawyer and businessman.
"I was privileged to enjoy his friendship and receive his advice," Mr Ahern said. "As an officer of the party and a friend and adviser of taoisaigh and ministers his importance was far greater than his official role," he said.
The Labour Party leader Mr Ruairi Quinn also paid tribute to Mr Ryan: "Eoin was always a thoughtful contributor and a considerate colleague. He was, in particular, a most committed European who made a huge contribution to increasing knowledge and understanding of the European project in this country."
Mr Ryan's father, Dr James Ryan, was a founding member of Fianna Fáil and long-serving Government minister.
Mr Ryan is survived by his wife, Joan; his sons Mark, Jim and Eoin; and his daughter Derbhail. Eoin is a TD for the Dublin South East constituency and a junior minister in the Government.
