Ireland should ratify the EU’s Stabilisation and Association Agreement with Serbia, Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore and members of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs have said, reports. The ratification of Serbia would effectively pave the way for it to become a member of the EU – less than two decades after it became an international pariah for its role in the Balkan wars.
The Tánaiste attended a meeting of the committee yesterday to ask it to recommend the ratification to the Dáil and Seanad. “In taking this step today, I believe we are playing our part in advancing the peace process for the western Balkans,” he said.
