The Taliban militia has told the US that eight foreign aid workers now jailed in Afghanistan are safe and healthy despite US-led air strikes now underway, the State Department said this evening.
"The Taliban said it had sent an official from its foreign ministry to check on the eight, including two US citizens, after the strikes began late Sunday and reported that they were well," spokesman Mr Richard Boucher said.
"The ministry of foreign affairs continues to assure us the detainees are safe and well," Mr Boucher told reporters.
"The Taliban ministry of foreign affairs has also assured us that there is strict security at the detention center for the safety of the detainees and they also stated that the detainees are safe from air attacks," he said.
