Damascus - The Syrian government arrested its best known opposition figure over the weekend and also threatened to lock up another prominent dissident.
The arrest heightens fears of an end to President Bashar al-Assad's reforms and a new wave of repression. The lawyer for Mr Riad Turk confirmed yesterday that his client had been arrested one day earlier by state security agents while visiting a doctor's home in Tartus on the Mediterranean coast.
