BANGKOK - Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi left her home yesterday for the first time in about three weeks to pay respects at her mother's tomb on the eighth, anniversary of her death.

A statement from military intelligence in Rangoon, received in Bangkok, said that Aung San Suu Kyi was accompanied by senior party leaders to the tomb near the Shwedagon pagoda. Analysts noted the outing took place at a time of potential tension in the Burmese capital, where a bomb blast at a pagoda complex killed five people on Wednesday night.
